چکیده

Undergraduate students predicted what would be made visible by a planar mirror. A paper-and-pencil task confirmed previous findings that when approaching a mirror from the side, participants expected to see their reflection in the mirror earlier than they actually would. This early response was found for all mirrors when the observer moved horizontally--even when the mirror was placed on the floor or the ceiling--but not when the observer moved vertically (in a lift). The data support the hypothesis that many people imagine the world in the mirror as rotated around the vertical axis. When participants had to judge manipulated mirror reflections according to their naturalness, a high degree of tolerance was found. In contrast to the prediction task, a rotation around the vertical axis was judged to be less natural than other distortions. The authors conclude that perceptual knowledge and predictive knowledge lead to different patterns of errors. ((c) 2003 APA, all rights reserved)

Enhancement of the Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect in One- Dimensional Magnetophotonic Crystals with Adjustable Spatial Configuration

We studied magnetophotonic crystals (MPCs) with introduced magneticdefect layer sandwiched between magnetic and dielectric Bragg mirrors. Thesemagnetophotonic crystals have excellent capabilities to enhance reflection and Kerrrotation simultaneously. By adjusting spatial configuration such as repetition numbersof Bragg mirrors and thickness of magnetic defect layer, we a...

Coherent Transport of Single Photon in a Quantum Super-cavity with Mirrors Composed of Λ-Type Three-level Atomic Ensembles

In this paper, we study the coherent transport of single photon in a coupled resonator waveguide (CRW) where two threelevel Λ-type atomic ensembles are embedded in two separate cavities. We show that it is possible to control the photon transmission and reflection coefficients by using classical control fields. In particular, we find that the total photon transmission and reflection are achieva...

Modeling of phase volume diffractive gratings, part 2: reflecting sinusoidal uniform gratings, Bragg mirrors

A detailed model of diffraction of plane and Gaussian beams on plane uniform phase Bragg gratings based on a Kogelnik's theory of coupled waves is presented. The model describes reflecting gratings (Bragg mirrors) with arbitrary orientation in a plane-parallel plate having no material losses. It takes into account spectral width and angular divergence of laser beams. The results of modeling are...

Wolter Optics for Neutron Focusing

Focusing optics based on Wolter optical geometries developed for x-ray grazing incidence beams can be designed for neutron beams. Wolter optics are formed by grazing incidence reflections from two concentric conic sections (for example, a paraboloid and a hyperboloid). This has transformed observational X-ray astronomy by increasing the sensitivity by many orders of magnitude for research in as...

An Analytical Model for Rare Earth Doped Fiber Lasers Consisting of High Reflectivity Mirrors

The present article is concerned with an analytical solution for some parts of rare earth doped fiber laser equations. The presented model is valid for both four and three-level fiber lasers consisting high reflectivity mirrors. A typical method to obtain initial value in the numerical solutions of fiber laser equations is shooting method, which is based on an iteration process. Whereas this st...
